National Currency Collection
France, Louis XV, 1 louis d'or, 27 livres : 1724
Story
A local mint is a good idea
Coins for New France were minted in France and shipped across the Atlantic. Supplies of coinage and the stability of the local economy were dependent upon many issues, one of which was the weather. Ultimately destined for Québec, the French supply ship Chameau was forced onto a reef by a late-summer storm while heading for the Fortress of Louisbourg on Île Royale (Cape Breton Island). All lives and 80,000 livres in French coins were lost. Almost the entire hoard was recovered in 1965, 240 years too late for the colonies of Québec and Louisbourg.
